What a Winding-up orders is
A compulsory liquidation begins when the court grants a winding-up order, usually on a creditor's petition — HMRC is the most frequent petitioner. The Official Receiver takes control of the company, which stops trading immediately.

Frequently asked questions
- How do I check if a company has gone into liquidation?
- Search the company by name or number from the home page. If it has entered liquidation, administration or a CVA in the last two years, its page shows the dates, the appointed practitioner and links to the official Gazette notice and Companies House record. See also how to check if a company is insolvent.
- Where does this list come from?
- Insolvency practitioners and the courts must publish these events in The Gazette, the UK's official public record. Insolvency List indexes those notices within about an hour of publication during UK business hours and matches each one to its Companies House record for the SIC code, registered office and incorporation date.
- Can I filter companies in liquidation by industry or region?
- Yes — use the industry and region chips above, or the filters on the full insolvency register, which also lets you page through the complete history.
- What is the difference between a CVL, a winding-up order and an MVL?
- A CVL is started by the directors of an insolvent company; a winding-up order is imposed by the court on a creditor’s petition; an MVL closes a solvent company. Read what a CVL is.
