What liquidation means
Liquidation (winding up) closes a company for good: a licensed liquidator realises its assets and distributes the proceeds to creditors. Most UK liquidations are creditors' voluntary liquidations (CVLs) started by the directors; compulsory liquidations follow a winding-up order from the court, and members' voluntary liquidations (MVLs) close solvent companies.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I check whether a lender, broker or financial firm is in liquidation?
- Search the company name or number from the home page; its page shows every recorded procedure with dates and the practitioner. Our guide on checking if a company is insolvent covers the official sources too.
- Who is appointed when a lender, broker or financial firm goes into liquidation?
- A licensed insolvency practitioner is appointed as liquidator (or the Official Receiver in a compulsory liquidation). Their name and firm appear on each company page as soon as the Gazette notice is indexed.
- Can I see financial services companies in other procedures?
- Yes — the Financial services overview lists every procedure together, and the chips above switch between liquidations, administrations and CVAs.
